Whether you are bringing on new staff to open a salon, or if is a new responsibility for you in your career, it can sometimes be daunting to know where to start – but it doesn’t have to be! Bringing on new talent is an exciting opportunity to continue to grow your salon, strengthen your team dynamic, and evolve your salon offerings. The key is to know how to approach hiring so that you attract the right talent.

Here is a quick step-by-step for finding the best talent for your salon or spa:

1. Create your job description.

The first step in your hiring process is to write out a description of the role you are hiring for, detailing essential responsibilities and preferred qualifications. We have a number of examples below, which you can use to get started and adapt to fit your needs. As you craft the description, be sure to highlight key differentiators for your salon so that you stand out from other salons’ postings and your unique company culture shines through.

2. Submit your job descriptions to job boards.

After creating your job description, the next step is to submit to job boards, such as Indeed, LinkedIn, or ZipRecruiter. We recommend also looking for industry-specific job boards, such as Behind the Chair or Modern Salon. Note that a posting best works to attract appropriately qualified candidates when it includes base salary and/or benefit information.

3. Promote on social media.

Actively using social media is likely already a part of your salon marketing plan, but it can help with recruiting, too! Promoting your available positions on social can help widen your pool of applicants and shows clients that you are a busy, growing salon.

4. Consider attending industry events.

In addition to online recruiting, consider attending a local cosmetology school’s job fair to meet up-and-coming talent. If you’re looking for the best of the best, consider even attending and networking at a major trade show like those promoted by the Professional Beauty Association, CosmoProf, or the American Association of Cosmetology Schools.

5. Find referrals at cosmetology schools or from other professionals.

Networking with local schools is often a favorite way to find new talent, but the top way to find new talent is to network with other respected hair professionals about past colleagues. Some salons go as far as offering referral bonuses, which can be an option for a medium-to-large-sized salon business.

6. Conduct interviews with prepared questions.

An interview (or set of multiple interviews) can be a much better way to gauge whether a candidate is a good fit. Prepare detailed, behavioral questions in the mix to understand what a candidate might do in a given situation. Here are a few example salon staff interview questions:

■ How do you keep your station organized and clean during busy hours?

■ What is your favorite new hair trend?

■ How many customers do you typically serve in one shift?

■ Have you ever dealt with an unhappy client? What did you do to resolve it?

■ Are you experienced with diverse hair textures?

7. Invite them in for a shadow day.

Despite the name, a shadow day can shed light on a lot of information you just can’t gather in an interview. Does the candidate’s personality fit with the rest of your team dynamic? Are they friendly with clients and peers? How do they react when faced with a new challenge? Inviting a candidate you are seriously considering to spend the day shadowing you or another senior staff member can help you – and the candidate! – really determine if this could be the start of something great.

8. Check certifications and references.

Most states have a state board for cosmetology and a verification process for licenses (For example, this is the professional license search tool for Georgia). You’ll want to speak to professional references that can verify that the candidate possesses the skills required to meet the demands of the role. Plan to speak to 1-3 prior employers, mentors, or cosmetology instructors that can vouch for the candidate. In addition, some businesses will conduct a background check or other third-party confirmation, depending on local and state laws.

9. Make an offer and begin onboarding.

Depending on the state, local, and salon policies, the chosen candidate should expect to sign an offer letter, complete a W2 tax form, review an employee/salon handbook, and receive in-depth training on any company-specific policies and procedures.

Other Salon Recruiting Tips

Describe what your company offers candidates in the job description. Be as transparent as possible with pay, benefits, responsibilities, and levels of autonomy.

Be clear about workload. Will customers follow the hairdressers, for example, or will the salon need a certain number of customers to be served in a given time period?

Consider a trial period. Typically, the first 90 days are considered to be probationary for employees, but that should be clearly laid out ahead of time in the employee handbook.

Include the wider team in interviews. The larger team may want to be involved in hiring the salon manager, for example.

Talk about equipment expectations. New hires might expect certain types of equipment. For instance, a hairstylist might expect a hydraulic salon chair. A shampoo tech may expect comfortable shampoo backwash units that are easy to clean.

Hair Salon Roles & Job Descriptions

Below is a list of example salon job descriptions you can use to help with hiring. As mentioned above, these should be customized to fit your salon’s needs. It’s important that the duties listed clearly match the responsibilities and expectations you have for the role, but a prospective candidate should also get a feel for your salon’s unique personality by reading the description–that way the right candidates will feel drawn to apply.
